A humorous read about an incredible dog and how he found his true, yet unexpected calling.
A dog. A friendship. A purpose.

My Thoughts

The author of Joyful Trouble, Patricia Furstenberg, came across the true story of a South African Great Dane called Just Nuisance when she was researching her Sunday blog column about all things dog related; She then reinvented 'Just Nuisance' as 'Joyful Trouble' and wrote and illustrated this heart warming story that will appeal to animal lovers everywhere.

Patricia tells the tale of the friendly great dane with a heart of gold through the eyes of a patient and loving grandfather who sprinkles his wonderful story with lots of wise advice.

“Determination and faith, Ana, will always get you through tough times. Always”

The key story points are cleverly repeated in answers to young Ana and Tommy's questions,  an ingenious way to get the message across without patronising the reader.

The idea of a dog (no ordinary sea dog!) called Trouble is enticing and the fact that it is based on a true story makes the book all the more enchanting.  Joyful Trouble is further bolstered by beautiful illustrations (see above and below for two samples kindly provided by the author who is obviously extremely talented as she did these too!)

The children I asked to read this story for my review were fired up by the power of petition and how, by joining forces, the able seamen in Patricia's lovely novel are able to save the friendly great dane from a terrible fate.

Joyful Trouble is a must read for all animal lovers and would make a wonderful gift for grandparents to read to grandchildren on visits.

Thank you so much Patricia for sharing your wonderful book and some of its lovely illustrations with me.  Congratulations on a beautifully told tale. I wish you every success.
