Fernando Can Tango

Another book from the wonderful Jude Lennon - you my remember we were treated to Pirate Lamby and His Woolly Crew last year and today we are here to talk about Fernando Can Tango.

The Story

Valentina is the best dancer in Mendoza. She longs to dance at the Tango Day celebrations in Buenos Aires. But, she needs a partner to dance with. She's heard that Fernando can tango but will she find him in time?

'Valentina es la mejor bailarina de Mendoza. Anhela bailar en las celebraciones del Día del Tango en Buenos Aires. Pero, ella necesita un compañero para bailar. Ella escuchó que Fernando puede bailar tango pero ¿lo encontrará a tiempo?' (I confess that I did not copy this from the book cover but rather lazily put the English version into Google Translate and even I can see it is not the same as shown on the book cover which I'm sure is better Spanish!)

My Thoughts

A Spanish teacher asked Jude Lennon if they could work on a bi-lingual book together and this lovely story is the result. The illustrations were done by Spanish students so many congratulations to them - they are wonderful and really bring the book to life. Fernando Can Tango would be ideal for English students learning Spanish or vice versa. The vocabulary is varied but repeated so it would be an excellent learning aid and an interesting story to which students can relate. I have also read the book to young children who are not yet learning Spanish and the story held their attention well. When they took the book to look at themselves, I could see them trying to match the English word to the Spanish one - they may not have been correct but such curiosity and exploration is a fabulous foundation for language so congratulations to the authors for providing such inspiring material.

Malala's Magic Pencil

As a child in Pakistan, Malala made a wish for a magic pencil that she could use to redraw reality. She would use it to give gifts to her family, to erase the smell from the rubbish dump near her house, to sleep an extra hour in the morning As she grew older, Malala wished for bigger and bigger things. She saw a world that needed fixing. And even if she never found a magic pencil, Malala realised that she could still work hard every day to make her wishes come true.
